DR Congo Relief Appeal

Democratic Republic of Congo:
Relief Appeal for Internally Displaced Persons

‘You cannot imagine what this will mean to the people… just knowing that someone cares is huge!’
Ps Melinda Dwight, ACC Regional Director for Africa.

The situation:

1.6 million people are estimated to have been displaced as a result of conflict within eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) (WHO, 03/11/2008). The conflict, centred around the provincial capital, Goma, involves the Congolese army, CNDP, armed local militia and Rwandan Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (AI, 30/10/2008).

“Whole communities have been uprooted, with women children and the elderly bearing the brunt of the fighting” (Amnesty International, 30/10/2008). There is concern within the international community for the safety and wellbeing of the displaced people, and there have been calls for action to prevent a repeat of the Rwandan genocide, in which three million people died.

What is ACC World Relief doing to help?

With a mandate to demonstrate the love of God through humanitarian aid and community development initiatives, ACC World Relief is partnering with the ACC Regional Director for Africa, Ps Melinda Dwight, and with local implementing partners to respond to this humanitarian crisis.

With your valued assistance, ACCWR will provide short term emergency relief assistance to internally displaced persons within the DRC through the local church. This will include the provision of basic needs such as temporary shelter, food and other necessities.

Bihar Flood Appeal

Bihar Flood Appeal:  Emergency Relief

Australian Christian Churches World Relief (ACCWR) endorsed by ACC Regional Director for Central Asia, Ps David Storer, has launched an emergency relief appeal to assist in alleviating the suffering of communities affected by extensive flooding in Bihar, north-east India.

The Kosi River which flows from Nepal through India, breached its banks in mid August after heavy monsoon rains, causing the worst flooding in the region for 50 years. One million people have been displaced, and 1700 villages have been inundated in the Bihar state. 90 people have died in this disaster, and there are fears for the health of many more as the international community mobilise to meet immediate humanitarian needs; food, water, shelter and health.

ACC World Relief is prioritising relief assistance to the worst effected and remote areas, including Kishanganj, Purnima and West Champaran districts.

Through our field partner, ACC World Relief is also ensuring that the most needy; including women, children, and marginalised groups within society are able to access relief assistance. Short term relief assistance will include provision of basic needs such as, but not limited to, temporary shelter, food and other necessities.

Our field partner is working to provide:

• Relief kits to those most in need: containing rice, wheat flour, pulses and vegetables, cooking utensils, stove, kerosene, bed sheets, stationery items.
• Emergency medical care to assist in treating snakebites and the massive influx of diarrhoea and ‘kala azar’ (black fever) cases.
• Providing assistance within a temporary relief camp which is mainly made up of the Dalits, a marginalised social group.

ACCWR are asking Australians to donate to this relief work and actively help to alleviate the suffering of the many thousands of people who have been affected by the flooding in Bihar, India.

Kenya Relief Appeal

Kenya Relief Appeal: Achievements

The Kenya Relief Appeal was launched by ACC World Relief and Africa Executive early 2008. Funds raised have been utilised to provide assistance to approximately 100 internally displaced persons (IDP) affected by civil unrest following the Kenyan elections in December 2007..

World Relief was able to provide assistance in the Kiambu District, where the Kenyan Government is working towards community resettlement. Funds provided basic needs including: 36 buckets of maize meal, a dietary staple and 30 blankets for families in need. Thank you for your support of this appeal.

In the event of surplus funds raised from any of the relief appeals, funds will be designated to another needy ACCWR Relief or Community Development Program which will alleviate poverty and suffering.

Thanks for partnering with ACC World Relief by assisting the nation of Kenya during this turbulent and challenging time.

Australian Drought Relief

The current drought is the worst on record, and its impact is being strongly felt by rural communities.  After seven years of drought many farmers have received little or no income; exhausted their savings and are falling further into debt because they cannot maintain mortgage repayments.

The impact of the drought is not just limited to primary producers, local businesses and churches are also struggling to survive. The devastation caused by the drought has placed enormous pressure on rural families and communities, increasing the rate of family breakdown, alcohol abuse, depression and suicides.

With endorsement from ACC national leadership ACC World Relief is coordinating a four-pronged approach to help those affected by the drought, which includes: raising funds, goods in kind, suicide prevention and trauma care, and legal/financial advice by referral through Australian Christian Services. One beneficiary stated, "To experience wonderful encouragement following a time of hardship and disappointment is an amazing ministry of refreshment and hope” - Harry Westcott.
